It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Irene Bucens in her 80th year. After a lengthy struggle with cancer, she passed away peacefully on July 22, 2022 in Ottawa at the Ottawa General Hospital. She was born in Latvia during WW2, and as a war refugee grew up in New Zealand, where she married Vitalijs (also born in Latvia) in 1966. The young couple then moved to Canada in 1968. Irene raised 2 boys, worked as a teacher at Hillcrest High School for many years, enjoyed gardening, painting and playing classical music on her piano. She led a full life in retirement, travelling to different parts of the world, including many stays in her birth country of Latvia. She will be missed by her husband Vitalijs Bucens, her sons Alexander (Valdis) and Paul (Imants), as well as her grandchildren Edgars, Leonora, Nadia and Sonja.
Irene’s final care has been entrusted to Beechwood Cemetery. A graveside service will be held at Beechwood Cemetery on August 2, 2022 at 1:30pm.
A donation can be made in her memory to the Ottawa Cancer Centre (https://www.ottawacancer.ca/donation/) or to the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia (https://okupacijasmuzejs.lv/en/)."
