The family of Dr. Ales Smetana is saddened to announce his peaceful passing in his 91st year, surrounded by loved ones.
He leaves behind his loving wife Lise Robillard, his sons Dan Smetana (Danielle Patry), Tom Smetana and David (Cara) Smetana. His grandchildren Kevin, Chelsea, Ryan, Evan, Cameron and Nolan Smetana will miss “Grandpa Ales” dearly.
Happily retired in 1999, he continued to go to his office and enjoyed his long and distinguished career as an Entomologist at Agriculture Canada.
A passionate man, his love of driving, sports, travel, picking wild mushrooms and cultivating exotic plants have led to an interesting and fulfilled life.
His passion for collecting beetles was the common thread that motivated him to travel the world.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ong, Dr. Cagiannos, Dr. Hirsh and their teams, as well as all the Carefor nurses for their excellent care.
A celebration of life will take place at a date yet to be determined.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Ales' passing and the fact that Covid prevented my seeing him and Lise for the last 18 months of his life. Sadly, it was not to be. His sense of curiosity, wonder and his zest for life...a storm tracker and tornado hunter into his late 80s... was an inspiration. His was in every sense a life well-lived. R.I.P. Ales. You will be missed.

I will miss our lunch room chats with Ales and the wisdom he dispensed calmly. His accounts of life in Europe prior to coming to Canada were fascinating. Ales' passing is a great loss for us all. Lise, please accept my condolences to you and the rest of his family.

Lise,
Sorry to hear about Ales passing. He was a wonderful man and an inspiration. I will always picture him in his active wear either heading out or finishing some sport activity. He was smart and always helpful.
May you remember the good times.
Ales will be dearly missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to Lise and all of Ales’ family members and friends.
With my deepest sympathy
Debbie
