Alexander Douglas MacKenzie (Doug) March 30, 1938 – February 1, 2021 passed away at Mount Sinai Hospital from complications with pneumonia. Cherished father to Bill (Laurence) and Judith and loving grandfather to Skyler, MacKenzie, Eloise and Charlotte. He is survived by long-time friend and first wife Barbara MacKenzie, Brother John Andrew (Ian) MacKenzie (Paula), wife Jane McKelheer and stepchildren Joe and Lesley. He is pre-deceased by his parents John William MacKenzie and Annie May MacKenzie. He was loved by his dearest cousin Lib Gibson (Bill), loyal friend Kimiko Shimokawa and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Doug was well known for his kind and generous heart that touched so many, helping out others in need from coast to coast. He would light up a room with his infectious laugh that would quickly have others in fits of giggles.

Born in Toronto, he spent his early years in Bankfield and Rouyn-Noranda Quebec. He attended Kings College at Dalhousie in Nova Scotia before he transferred to U of T.  Following in his father’s footsteps he became a mining engineer after achieving the professional designation of P. Eng. from the University of Toronto. He then realized he wanted to go back to school for his MBA at Western University where he made life-long friends and graduated in 1963.  He moved to Montreal and worked for Noranda Research Center in Pointe Claire, before being recruited to work at Burns Brothers & Denton in Toronto.   He touched the lives of so many and was well known in the mining industry.  He spent much of his career as a businessman identifying and developing mining projects in Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Cuba, and many other regions around the world.

A special thank you for the care he received from Dr. William Watson at St Michael’s Hospital family practice and the medical teams at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Douglas will be laid to rest at Beechwood cemetery in Ottawa during a private family ceremony on February 6th. The family is planning to have a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. Friends or family who are interested in participating in the Celebration of Life please contact the family at judeskymack@yahoo.ca. In the meantime the family asks that you give your loved ones a big, warm drawn-out bear hug on his behalf.

Anyone who really knew my dad, loved him. He was a kind, caring, loving, generous man with incredible resilience that I will use to help motivate me when I need to pick myself back up. I am proud to be your daughter and miss you deeply. I will love you forever! You make me smile every time I hear your giggles and laughter in my head. Rest In Peace Dad❤️?
