Roy Hoban, who personified the very best traditions of honest and selfless service during his career in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, passed away peacefully in Ottawa on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. Pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Jean. He was the adored companion of Linda Irving, who brought such joy into his life over the past 3 years. Devoted father of Debra Lowe (Doug) and Kip Hoban (Danielle), and the very proud grandfather of Jordan Hoban, with whom he had a special bond. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to the late John and Whila Hoban. He is survived by his sisters, Joan, Betty, Mary, Evelyn and brother Clyde.

After graduating high school, Roy’s first full time job was as a teller with the Royal Bank. Wanting to expand his horizons and see the rest of Canada, he joined the RCMP. The result was a distinguished career that would span 35 years. In 1992 he retired at the rank of Superintendent. Roy was an active, athletic person, who enjoyed training for and participating in marathons, cycling tours, and long distance ski races. He was also an avid golfer and bowler. Following his retirement from the RCMP, Roy volunteered at the Meadow’s Golf Course as team captain, in charge of the Sunday marshals. He was also responsible for the VIP Seniors Bowling League at Walkley Bowling Lanes, providing an opportunity for seniors to stay active, socialize and meet new friends. It wasn’t until this year, at the young age of 85, that he retired from his captaincy at the Meadows Golf Course and the responsibility of running the VIP Seniors Bowling League. His easy going nature, infectious humour, and belief that you should live life to the fullest made Roy an inspiration to all who met him.

Family and friends are invited to a Visitation at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue on Friday, January 10, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm. A Memorial Service will take place in Beechwood’s Sacred Space, on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
