Shirley departed this life peacefully at Billings Lodge on Friday, May 15 in her 90th year. The daughter of Marjorie Brown and Hewitt Smith, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Hayes, sister, Audrey Belot and daughter, Laura Moodie. Shirley will be sorely missed by her siblings, David Smith and Nancy Smith, her brother-in-law, Don Belot, her children, Mark, Chris and Janet (Derek Chaplin), her grandchildren Sarah Gourley (Andrew), Christian Hayes, Dylan Hayes, Carley Best and Kirby Hayes and her ever-smiling great-grandson, Bennett Gourley. Shirley was a lifelong Old Ottawa South resident and parishioner at Trinity Anglican Church.
Shirley’s passions included her dogs, playing bridge, crafting, and spending time with her family and friends. Widowed at an early age, Shirley showed great courage and drive in raising her family with the help of her Aunt Muriel (Na) and will be forever remembered for her great laugh and sense of humour.
The Hayes family would like to thank the entire staff at Billings Lodge for their kind and considerate care of Shirley over the past 8 years. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
