COLUMBARIUM: A outdoor or indoor structure for the disposition of remains. Columbarium are made up of several niches. Columbaria can have solid faces for inscription or be glass faces with internal plaques to view the information or urns.
COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE: A service or ceremony in memory of the deceased, without the presence of the body.
CREMATION: The reduction of remains into small bone fragments through intense heat. The body is generally placed in urn.
CREMATORIUM: Building in which the cremation of bodies takes place.
CRYPT: A space in a wall built to receive a casket, then sealed and covered with a plaque with an inscription about the deceased. May accommodate more than one casket. An above ground permanent resting plaque for a casket. May be a single structure or part of a larger mausoleum, either indoors or outdoors. DONATION “IN MEMORY OF” (In Memorium): A donation made to honour the deceased, made to a cause or an organization in particular.
EMBALMING: The process of disinfecting, preserving and restoring a human body. ENTOMBMENT: Placement of a casket in an above ground structure.
EULOGY: A brief speech describing the qualities of the deceased person and celebrating his or her accomplishments.
FUNERAL: A ceremony to render homage to the deceased. Funerals may or may not be religious events.
FUNERAL PROCESSION: The line of vehicles accompanying the hearse from the funeral service to the cemetery.
MARKER: They are a flat monuments, usually made of granite or bronze and include information such as the person’s name, date of birth and death, symbols and a tribute.
MONUMENT: Commonly referred to as headstones, they are upright monuments, made of granite and include information such as the person’s name, date of birth and death, symbols and a tribute.
GRAVE: An excavation in the earth for the purpose of burying the deceased. A piece of land that is used for the purpose of interring humand remain, either in a casket or an urn.
FAMILY MAUSOLEUM: An above-ground structure, sometimes within a larger mausoleum, built to serve as a resting place members of the same family.
FUNERAL COACH (HEARSE): A vehicle built to carry a casket It is used from the funeral home to the church and/or the cemetery so I would simply remove the last part.
INTERMENT: Commonly referred to as burial. Placement of an urn or a casket in the ground.
INURNMENT: Placement of an urn in an above ground structure.
LOT: A measured piece of land in a cemetery for which a family or an individual purchases interment rights. A piece of land that is used for the purpose of interring human remains, either in a casket or an urn. It contains more than one grave.
MAUSOLEUM: A public or private building containing crypts. It may also contain a columbarium structure and a small chapel area.
NICHE: A space in a wall or in a columbarium used to place urns containing cremated remains. Small objects, photographs, and even children’s drawings are also often kept in the niche. An above ground permanent resting place for an urn. It is located in a columbarium structure, either indoors or outdoors. It is sealed and could have a glass, granite or marble front.
OBITUARY (death notice): A notice published in a newspaper or on the Internet that announces the death of a person, provides details about the funeral, lists the survivors and provides details about the person’s life.
PREARRANGEMENTS (preplanned funeral arrangements): Contract between a person and a funeral home that determines what should be done after that person dies: viewing, cremation, funeral. Cemetery or funeral arrangements that are made ahead of someone’s passing. This can include choosing cemetery property, a monument,

SECTION (S): A portion of the cemetery that has been design for burial. Certain section may be designed for specific cultural or religious needs or for specific groups such as military, police, RCMP or CSIS.
SHARED MONUMENT: A shared monument is shared by two families - one family owns the lot and monument on one side of the monument, while another family owns the lot and the other side of the same monument.
VISITATION ROOM: Room in the Beechwood National Memorial Center where the family and loved ones come together. URN: A container in which the cremated remains are placed.
VIEWING/VISITATION: A visitation room is a room where friends and family can gather, typically prior to a funeral or memorial service. The casket or urn might be on display as well as pictures, flowers and mementos.
