Jack-You Chin, also known to his friends as Kay, passed away peacefully in the comfort of family at his bedside on May 13, 2019 at the Maycourt Hospice at the age of 81 years old.
Born November 20, 1937 in Canton, China to Chin Kwok-Chuen and Chin (Wong) Yuet-Sui, Kay came to Canada when he was a teenager eager to embark on a new journey.
He was quiet gentleman who found comfort in books, music and nature. Kay also had a solid appreciation for cars; after retiring his Cougar in the 1970’s, he can often be sighted cruising around town in his burgundy Thunderbird buying groceries to whip up a delicious meal for his family. We’re not sure if he actually liked to cook, but he was sure good at it! He is known for making the best Chinese Steamed Chicken among other tasty traditional recipes that will be greatly missed. His customers at the New Li Ho Restaurant were also complimentary of his food, but most of all they enjoyed his kindness and friendship. Customers would frequently come by the restaurant to find Kay with his signature bowtie and welcoming smile. Fishing was a favourite pastime that he enjoyed with his daughters although they would often scare away his catch. Despite this, he loved his daughters unconditionally and worked relentlessly to make sure that life would treat them well. They loved him right back.
Kay will be lovingly remembered by the mother of his children, Nancy, and his daughters Connie (Tek) and Ami (Edward). He will also be missed by his three sweet grand daughters Theia, Cassia and Emelia.
The family would like to thank the Glebe Centre for their care in the past few years and express their gratitude to Dr. Mark Nassim and the staff at the Maycourt Hospice for taking care of Kay in his final days.
Kay’s funeral will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the Beechwood Cemetery with visitation from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Burial at 11:00am with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Kay Jack-You Chin to the Ottawa Maycourt Hospice or Parkinson Canada.

My Sincere sympathy to all the family. I have so many wonderful memories of Kay, working with him after school and on the weekends at the New Li Ho Restaurant. He was always immaculate in his ‘ signature uniform’ of a white dinner jacket and black bow tie. Customers adored him and he always remembered each customer. He was very kind, thoughtful, caring and generous. I remember him buying groceries which included steaks to an impoverish family as well as hiring them to do odd jobs. There were other customers that offered to trade work for a meal, which he was agreeable to and If there was no work, he would create work for them. I remember seeing these twin brothers shovelling the snow off his front lawn in the winter, when I asked Kay about it, he said they needed money and a meal. He would buy favourite foods for loved ones, he brought fruits and steaks to my Grandmother, Dim Sum for my daughter Kaila. Etc. He was a master at cooking, everything cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. I remember a customer who came in for a take out order durning the staff meal time, since all the cooks were eating their meal, he would have to wait a little longer for his order. We explained this to the customer. Kay not wanting to have the customer wait a little longer decided to cook the meal he ordered. The next evening the same customer returned at the same time while the staff was sitting down for their meal. Surprised, we explain that he would have to wait till the staff finished their meal and perhaps it would be better if he came at a different time. He said he came back at the same time because he wanted Kay ( who normally work in the front of the house) to cook his meal! He will be greatly missed.
