In 1997, Beechwood Cemetery set aside part of Section 101 for the exclusive use of the Portuguese community. Containing more than 200 lots of varying sizes, Section 101 will be used for many generations of parish members.
In the central feature of this section is the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. In 1917, Our Lady of Fatima, better known as the Virgin Mary, appeared to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal, asking them to pray and devote themselves to the Holy Trinity and to “say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war.” On May 13, 1981, after the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, The Holy Father attributed his escape from certain death to the intervention of Our Lady: “... it was a mother's hand that guided the bullet's path and in his throes the Pope halted at the threshold of death.”
