Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Conceição Gouveia de Sousa died peacefully in the embrace of her daughter Maria Linhares de Sousa on the afternoon of 17 July 2022 in Ottawa.
Pre-deceased by her husband José and son Joseph, she is survived by her grandchildren Christopher, his wife Irene, Sarah, Patrick, Lisa, Daniel and his wife Julie and great-grandson Tomás.
Born in Porto da Cruz, Madeira on 12 October 1924, she emigrated to Canada with two young children to join her husband Jose in 1954. She embraced her adopted homeland and saw it as the future for her family although she never forgot and took much pride in her Portuguese birth and roots. Her kindness and generous spirit created a circle of love for the many family and friends who mourn her passing. She served the patients and staff of Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital for decades with grace and devotion. Upon her retirement she continued to be active in her community and Church.
Her family extends thanks to Doctor Galbraith and the support staff who cared for her to the very end.
Friends are invited to visit the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa on Sunday July 24 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tributes and words of remembrance will be held at 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica, 385 Sussex Dr, Ottawa Monday July 25 at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Beechwood Cemetery.

Maria . . . Your Mother and mine were born in the same year, just a couple of months apart. My Mother passed away 7 years ago but she is still dear and clear in my memories, as yours will be for all your family. Life is a blessing but so are our remembrances of those who pass on.
Lara, neighbourhood kid
I will always remember Connie's warm and gentle nature. When I was young, she would invite me over and I would watch as she moved around the kitchen with grace, happily preparing a plate of cookies or whatever she was working on. I loved her smile so much and stepping across the threshold of her front door felt like time stood still, in the most beautiful way; embraced by a Grandmother's love.
Sending so much love to Connie's family, as you navigate the transition of this beautiful woman. With so much love to you all, Lara

Connie was a close neighbor for 40 years.
In all that time, I never heard a cross word from her about anyone, unless it was someone who blocked her driveway
She always seemed happy to see me and we enjoyed chatting when I popped over in the evenings
If she was watching TV, she would turn it off so we could talk
She was a gentle soul and I will remember her with great fondness.
Connie was such an important part of my family's life and we will always miss her.
