Peacefully, in Ottawa and surrounded by loved ones, Dhanraj Latchman passed away on May 4th, 2022.  Beloved husband of Mrs. Lynnette Latchman, cherished father of Anita (Gopal), Jaikaran, Indira (Shiv), Deveka (Steve), Vicky (Dhar), Sabita (Par) and Geeta (Charles). Proud grandfather of 15 and 3 great- grandchildren.  He will be dearly missed. After working many years in Guyana as a dispenser, he moved to Canada and worked in long-term care until his retirement. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed reading, a lover of nature and animals, enjoyed fishing, and spending time with his family.

Family and friends may visit on Thursday, May 12th between 6 pm – 9 pm and celebration of life on Friday, May 13th, at 9 am at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Humane Society would be appreciated.  Love was his legacy.

Dad your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever. When I was a child all problems had ended with a single word from my father.A smile from him was sunshine,he was smart generous and honourable without fail. You have been there for me no matter what bad choices I might have made, you lovingly repaired my broken spirit, helped me plot a new course and set me free to flying my own on matter where life takes me.Love you Dad

Nana may you rest in peace as our family now tries to navigate life without you.
I'm grateful for the years I had with my grandfather, but I'm finding it hard to say goodbye now that he is gone. I will cherish all the moments that we had together.
Saying goodbye is so hard. I will never forget how much you loved your family and how much we learned from you. May you rest in peace Nana❤️

Aunt Lynette, Anne, Indy, Devi, Vicky, Sabi, Geeta & Jaio - my sincere condolences along with those of my family, go out to you in these times of sadness. Uncle Latch lived an amazing, authentic life and was one of the kindest, most humble and honest man I knew. My family and I are so sad to hear of his passing. Be strong as you celebrate his life and the memories of his legacy.
In the hope it brings you comfort I would like to share some words of my favorite philosopher: “For what is it to die but to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek the great unknown unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.” Uncles Latch is dancing in heaven.

I am sad to learn of the passing of my Cha Cha Oodal. I was hoping to see him again next year but sadly that will not be possible. He was such a caring gentle soul who always showed an interest in me and together with Lynette Che Chee always went out of their way to welcome my visits to their homes in Guyana and Ottawa. I will always remember his gentle smiling face. He always seemed happy with family around him. Rest In Peace.

My dearest sweet beloved dad, my heart cried as I say farewell to you . You have been my inspiration and hero through out my life and I was blessed to have a divine soul like you for my dad. I have always feared of not being with you at the time you most needed me and you fulfilled that desire of my heart and being the divine soul you are I know you knew this was my wish as you left earth for your heavenly abode cradled in my arms on May 4th 2022 as I cried to you that your family loved you and not to leave us but your heavenly father was waiting for you. Dad thank you for watching over us from above and for the beautiful Om that you presented to me from your heavenly abode . Dad you will always be in my heart and thoughts and will be missed hamesha hamesha . Until we meet again. I love you dad.

I am very sad to hear of Oodal Cha-Cha’s passing and am disappointed he will not be there when next I visit Ottawa. He was a gentle amiable soul who enjoyed his extended family. I especially appreciated the interest he and Lynette Cha-chee showed in my progress on my path to becoming a doctor. They always welcomed me to their homes in Guyana and Canada. Yvonne and I extend our deepest condolences to the family and may he Rest In Peace. Ram

It’s a scorching hot summers day. The crickets and beetles lurk around every corner yet you welcome those lucky bastards and refuse to kill them. You have never been much for “entomicide”. Erik and I have grown exhausted from playing on your makeshift cart, only one of your many inventions. As we explore the thick jungle of karayla, we stumble upon… it. Something tall. Something smelly. Oh my Shiva! It is you! Covered head to toe in your famous vinegar while sitting on your chair with your trusty steed, the walker, beside you. Suddenly, you speak, “Erik, Victoria, come sweep ‘pon da driveway na. Take da broom and sweep ‘way de dust.” A task Erik and I were brainwashed into thinking it was fun but in hindsight, it is a futile task with no end goal in sight. I realize now, we were Sisyphus. Condemned to a single monotonous task. A task designed entirely for the sake of usurping the young’s energy for the greater good: peace and quiet. As we sweep, you sip your Caribbean rum and ice, flip the pages of your pharmaceutical book, which to us, looks like gibberish. You are telling us that “lactose is one of the most important sugars” and to drink our milk.
Dearest nana, to me, you are not lost. A great mind like yours is eternal and can never fade. You are still with me in everything I see. To me, you are the words in the books I read; the anatomical drawings I must study; the comfort I feel when an experiment goes well but also the failed experiments. You are the driving force in my persistance because I want to make you proud. To me, you will never die for you are not a mere fleshy vessel. You are much greater than that.
I live by something you once told me, “the one thing people can never take away from you, is your knowledge”. I will never forget how you inspired me to find beauty in the natural world and be amazed by the natural shapes and colours of the flora and fauna around us - except for bugs. My curiosity is you. In everything I see, I question why it’s like that. I know you are the reason I do so. This isn’t goodbye, it’s just a celebration. A reason for family to get together and celebrate you, giving you the attention you deserve.
