The family of Dr. Ales Smetana is saddened to announce his peaceful passing in his 91st year, surrounded by loved ones.
He leaves behind his loving wife Lise Robillard, his sons Dan Smetana (Danielle Patry), Tom Smetana and David (Cara) Smetana. His grandchildren Kevin, Chelsea, Ryan, Evan, Cameron and Nolan Smetana will miss “Grandpa Ales” dearly.
Happily retired in 1999, he continued to go to his office and enjoyed his long and distinguished career as an Entomologist at Agriculture Canada.
A passionate man, his love of driving, sports, travel, picking wild mushrooms and cultivating exotic plants have led to an interesting and fulfilled life.
His passion for collecting beetles was the common thread that motivated him to travel the world.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ong, Dr. Cagiannos, Dr. Hirsh and their teams, as well as all the Carefor nurses for their excellent care.
A celebration of life will take place at a date yet to be determined.

Passing of Ales is extremely sad news for me. He was always so active that I thought he will be with us forever. He was an integral part of CNC and its team. He was my first teacher of taxonomy when I arrived to Canada in 1973, and step bu step he explain me haw to work on world revision of selected aleocharine beetles. He had a profound impact on my entire professional life and I never forget about this. A very good man and an extraordinary professional with endless energy is no longer among us but I will always keep him in my heart. Good buy my friend you will never be forgotten.

It is kind of surprise, last time you came to my office seems not long ago. I still remember the insect species name from China which you want me to help to translate some of the information. Over the years, i was impressed of your drive for scientific accuracy and preciseness. I enjoyed our interactions.
