It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our cherished husband, father, and grandfather, Reid Scharfe on October 23rd, 2021 at the age of 78. Reid passed away in hospital with his wife and daughter holding his hands.
Reid is survived by his wife of 57 years, Diane Scharfe (nee Stubbs) and his daughter, Amie (Dave O’Neill). He leaves behind three adoring grandchildren (Kieran, Liam and Seamus) who miss their Boppa immensely. Reid was predeceased by his son Brandon. Reid also leaves behind several sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
Reid left home at a young age to pursue a dream. He spent the next 28 years as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy and continued his dedication to Canada as a public servant for the remaining 18 years of his career. Reid’s warmth, fairness, and kindness touched everyone who came into contact with him. He always had a story to share, all told with a welcoming smile, and a bright twinkle in his eyes. He never met a stranger and loved nothing more than to share a laugh with someone. He was a lover of reading – anything military or history related were his favourites. Being an avid gardener Reid felt at home with his hands in the earth. Reid was a devoted husband and built a beautiful life with his wife. He was a loving, supportive father and the best Boppa (grandpa) anyone could hope for. He will be forever missed.
A private service will be held for Reid’s immediate family. We invite family and friends to leave a message in the virtual guestbook or to make a donation in Reid’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Reid while stationed at Leitrim. His passion, dedication and compassion were steadfast along with his wit and sense of humour, my deepest condolences to the family on his passing.

Diane, Amie and family i can't imagine your tremendous loss. Reid was such a loveable person with a heart of gold and a mischievous twinkle. Our Sunday dinners were always so full of fun when you and Reid were there. Amie's birth was such a joyous event and Reid was so proud. Weekends in Kingston were always exciting and helped to ease the time while Reid was in Alert. I hope your memories will be a comfort to you. Some day memories will bring will bring a smile to your lips and dry the tears from your eyes. ❤️

My sincere condolences, Diane and family. Served with Reid in Inuvik, Alert and Kingston. He had a great sense of humor. He used to shout "Wyatt Earp" when out partying. Take care, he leaves behind fond memories.

I’ve seen Reid at the kids’ school sooooo many times over the years at events, pick ups and Remembrance Day ceremonies. He was always smiling and so welcoming- it made you want to chat with him and share a few minutes with him any time you could. He was an amazing Grampa - always there for his boys. Sending you all so much love and hugs during this difficult time. Our deepest condolences ❤️

My condolences to Reids family. I only had the opportunity to work with Reid at a couple of postings for short periods (i.e...Alert for 3 or 4 months) but he was the most jovial, friendly man! He had a aura to him of kindness and happiness 24/7. A smile and attitude that could light up a room!
Rest in Peace gentleman Reid.

I only met Reid/Boppa a handful of times but you could see he was a kind man who had a sparkle of mischief in his eye. These are the best Boppas and the most wonderful friends. His light will shine on in you Amie. You have the same twinkle in your eyes. My condolences to all of you as you navigate this immense loss.
