In loving memory of our dearest mother, grandmother and great grandmother
Maria Wunara
25 November 1935 - 4 October 2021
"She was a great combination of warmth and kindness, laughter and love"
The family of Maria Wunara is saddened to announce her peaceful passing in her 86th year, surrounded by loved ones.
Maria lived a life of gratitude and grace; she passed peacefully with her family at her side. She was predeceased by her third and youngest daughter, her youngest son, and her son-in-law.
Maria was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. She was married in 1951 with Brata Chandrawan, and their dream was to have a big family.
Together with her husband, Brata and Maria opened a restaurant specialized in noodles in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her warmth, kindness and hospitality extended to friends, neighbors and others who would stop by the restaurant. She always had the coffee pot on and delicious home-cooking on the table.
Maria and Brata were married for 40 years. They often said "we have a good life and we're proud of our family." She lost the love of her life in 1991, Brata passed away because of cancer, even though she was devastated, she kept the family going on and strong.
In 1996 she moved to Canada to live with her youngest son, Hans.
Maria and Brata were blessed with nine children:
- Tan Pey Ling (+) - Teddy Jonathan
- Tan Pey Tjien - Agustinus Halim
- Tan Pey Lien - Rudy Santoso
- Hardian Chandrawan (+) - Tjong Mulyani Sari Dede
- Shelly Chandrawan - Eddy Tanzil (+)
- Herry Chandrawan - Khoe Ley Siang (Lily S.)
- Hans Chandrawan - Titin Suprihatin
- Pretty Chandarawan - Hie Kwet Fung

Twenty three grandchildren: Catharina-Andy, Eric-Kristina, Edward-Linda, Caroline-Chris, Jessica-Wefer, Patricia-Mulya, Alexander-Yohana, Elizabeth, Billy-Quynh, Kenny-Kyle, Yohana-Shane, Yanhardi, Paramita, Prajnadi, Augie-Budi, Laurence, Ega, Kelvin-Felicia, Ryan (+), Randy, Ricky, Matthew, and Andrew; and fifteen great grandchildren: Monica, William, Othniel, Neisha, Keisha, Kenneth, Ethan, Jordan, Hailey, Nicole, Careyna, Kimiko, Zoey, Kayden, Divya.
Maria was a role model to all of them, she was a strong woman, she always put others' needs ahead of her, she always there for family, she was the heart of the family. Her most important legacy is the way the each reflect her love and carry within them her values, lessons, hopes and dreams.
Even through her struggles with Parkinson in her ten last years, she always expressed her gratitude to those who cared for her. We would like especially to thank Dr. Cucan and Dr. Peter Tanuseputro for their compassionate care; Father Frans Wirayadi for his blessings and comfort.
Maria's sweetness and love touched all who knew her. Maria is deeply missed by her family.
A golden heart stopped beating, Hardworking hands at rest, it broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best.
They say that memories are golden, well maybe that is true, but we never wanted memories, we only wanted you.
Your life was love and labour, your love for your family true, you did your best for all of us, we will always remember you.
We sat beside your bedside, our hearts were crushed and sore, we did our duty to the end, ‘til we could do no more.
In tears we watched you sinking, we watched you fade away, and though our hearts were breaking, we knew you could not stay.
Our lips cannot speak how we loved you, our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss you, in our home that is lonely today.

My Popo is the most remarkable woman I know. She is perfect, combination of warmth, compassion, and love.
Catharina - Granddaughter
My Mom is the backbone of our family. She is the strongest, kindest, beautiful, smart and most loving person I know and we are so blessed to have her in our lives.
Pretty Chandrawan and Shella Chandrawan - Daughters
When you think of a grandmother; loving hands, wise words, and delicious home-cooked meals are probably some of the things that comes to mind. Our dearest Maria is all that and so much more. A hard working, selfless, and loving mother to her children. A gentle, funny, and patient grandmother to her grandchildren.
There are countless memories that we all share together, whenever we feel weary we can always find rest in our loving popo. Thank you for teaching and giving us everything that we could possibly need.
Rest in peace to our dear mama, popo, pothai. We will always remember you in our thoughts and hearts.
Caroline - Granddaughter
My Popo reminds me of a "Kitchen". She makes the best food and always remember my favorite 'baso goreng' and 'nyuk piang', her warmth and thoughtfulness will always stay by my heart and I will miss her cooking very much
Jessica – Granddaughter
For me, my mother is a mother who is fair to her children, willing to sacrifice for the happiness of her children, doesn't talk much but works a lot for everything.
Shelly Chandrawan – Daughter
I was told by my mother of how great of a person Maria my Pothai was, she loved her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren and she was loved by them also. For us great grandchildren, we don't have many memory of us with her. And some of us have only had stories told to us about her by our parents. But I’m sure I speak for all of us when i tell about how much of a wonderful and lovely person she was. And the little time we spent together could never be replicated. We love you Pothai and we will miss you
William – Great Grandson
Our time with Popo was short, we do not have the blessing to make a lot of memories, for oceans distance us apart. But in the little memories we have, her kindness and warmth can't be forgotten even if we try to. She worry for us, it's genuine and sincere, wishing us happiness in life. We love you, Popo, and may one day we share meal and laughter again.

Popo was a special person, always showing a tender smile, stronger than superman, and full of bright positivity. No matter how bad of a day I may have had as a child, coming home to her fresh cooked meals and cut fruits would always make things better. Of course in exchange, we'd help her with the TV so she can watch her favorite chinese dramas.
No matter who you were or where you were from, she would welcome you with a smile and food. She loved to feed people, often telling me I was too skinny and needed to eat more. She wanted me to become 'gemuk', which more or less means fat in indonesian, but also to her meant fortune, happiness, and health.
Sorry po, I did my best to eat all your food. Even though I did not become gemuk, you helped my heart become strong and loved. Thank you for everything you've done for us, we will always remember your warmth.
When I see you again, I'll happily show you how gemuk I've become.
