It is with profound sadness that we wish to announce the sudden passing of Normand Nault.

Normand was adored and will forever be in the hearts of his wife Marilyn (née Riley); his daughters and their husbands, Chantal (Robert Letcher) and Colette (Robert Milin); and his beloved grandchildren, Ariana, Chloë, Nicholas and Sophie.  Normand also leaves behind his loving brother and sisters and their spouses, Pauline (Yvon), Denise (Paul), Robert (Monique), Francine (Jacques) and Joanne (Alain). He will be missed by many cherished nieces and nephews and good friends.

Normand, the eldest of six children, was born on June 23,1944 in Trois-Rivières, Québec to Aline Brisebois and Jean-Louis Nault of Cap-de-la-Madeleine. Normand passed away, with Marilyn, Chantal and Colette by his side, following a tragic fall, on Monday, September 13, 2021, after a brief stay in the ICU of The Ottawa Hospital-Civic Campus.

Normand married the love of his life and best friend, Marilyn, in 1967, in a small chapel on Canadian Forces Base Kingston.  The next year they were delighted to welcome twin daughters, Chantal and Colette.  They enjoyed 54 wonderful years together living in Germany, England, Ontario and Québec, as a result of his military career.  After Normand’s retirement in 1998, they remained in Montreal and thoroughly enjoyed their urban life on le Plateau-Mont-Royal. They had recently moved to Ottawa to be closer to their daughters, their families and good friends.

Normand was very close to his siblings and their spouses.  Family gatherings usually included playing cards, dancing, enjoying a glass or two of wine and lots of laughter.  Normand thoroughly enjoyed the virtual gatherings held weekly throughout COVID.

Normand attended le Collège militaire royal (CMR) in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec and graduated in Engineering Physics from the Royal Military College (RMC) in Kingston, Ontario. The close friendships that he made at CMR and RMC have stood the test of time and even though in-person get-togethers have been curtailed due to COVID, the group has continued to meet virtually on a regular basis.

Normand completed his 36-year career in the Armed Forces at 202 Workshop Depot in Montreal. As Commanding Officer, he was instrumental in integrating adults with intellectual disabilities into the everyday life of the workshop, a first for the Canadian Armed Forces.

Following his retirement from the Forces, Normand embarked on his second “career”, starting a small business teaching computer skills to seniors and assisting them with their computers. He also volunteered for many years at a community centre in Montreal, preparing tax returns for low-income people.

In his thirties and forties, Normand was an avid runner, completing three marathons, including one in Greece. Some of his happiest moments were out on the water sailing or on the slopes skiing, passions that he taught his two daughters. As an avid sailor, he loved nothing more than sailing on Serenity with Marilyn, and later on, cruising on their motor yacht trawler, Infinity, on which they frequently hosted family and friends in the Thousand Islands.

Normand so loved spending time with his daughters and their families. From the beginning, he was a real hands-on Papa and Grand-papa, changing diapers, singing lullabies, reading stories, teaching his grandchildren how to fish and making sure they had computer games to play when they came to visit. Ariana, Chloë, Nicholas and Sophie spent many happy times together in Montreal visiting Grandma and Grand-papa. Normand was so proud of his daughters and grandchildren's accomplishments, celebrating all milestones with them.

Normand will forever be remembered as a kind, caring, loving man who was the rock of his family. He was so accomplished, from mastering technology to fixing anything around the house, always gladly sharing his knowledge with everyone. He truly was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and friend.

A private family interment will take place at Beechwood Cemetery and a celebration of Normand’s life will be held at a later date.  Invitations and details to family and close friends will follow once plans are finalized.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès soudain de Normand Nault.

Normand était adoré, et restera à jamais dans le coeur de son épouse Marilyn (née Riley); de ses filles et leurs maris, Chantal (Robert Letcher) et Colette (Robert Milin); et de ses petits-enfants bienaimés, Ariana, Chloë, Nicholas et Sophie. Normand laisse aussi dans le deuil son frère et ses soeurs aimants de même que leurs partenaires, Pauline (Yvon), Denise (Paul), Robert (Monique), Francine (Jacques) et Joanne (Alain). Il manquera également à ses nombreux neveux et nièces adorés, et à ses bons amis.

L’aîné de six enfants, Normand est né le 23 juin 1944 à Trois-Rivières, au Québec, fils d’Aline Brisebois et de Jean-Louis Nault, du Cap-de-la-Madeleine. Normand est décédé avec Marilyn, Chantal et Colette à ses côtés, à la suite d’une chute tragique, le lundi 13 septembre 2021, après un cours séjour dans l’unité des soins intensifs du Campus Civic, à L’Hôpital d’Ottawa.

Normand a épousé l’amour de sa vie et sa meilleure amie, Marilyn, en 1967, dans une petite chapelle de la Base des Forces canadiennes à Kingston. L’année suivante, ils ont accueilli avec joie leurs filles jumelles, Chantal et Colette. Ils ont passé 54 merveilleuses années ensemble, pendant lesquelles ils ont vécu en Allemagne, en Angleterre, en Ontario et au Québec en raison de la carrière militaire de Normand. Après sa retraite en 1998, ils sont restés à Montréal, où ils ont pleinement profité de leur vie urbaine sur le Plateau-Mont-Royal. Ils avaient tout récemment déménagé à Ottawa pour se rapprocher de leurs filles, leurs familles et leurs amis.

Normand avait une relation très étroite avec son frère, ses soeurs et leurs conjoints. Les rencontres de famille comprenaient habituellement des jeux de carte, de la danse, un verre de vin ou deux, et beaucoup de rires. Normand appréciait grandement leurs rassemblements virtuels chaque semaine pendant COVID.

Les amitiés profondes formées au CMR et au RMC ont résisté à l’épreuve du temps, et même si les rencontres en personne avait été suspendues en raison de COVID, le groupe se rassemblait encore virtuellement de façon régulière.

Normand a terminé sa carrière de 36 ans dans les Forces armées au 202^e Dépôt d’ateliers à Montréal. Dans son rôle de Commandant, il a contribué de façon déterminante à l’intégration des adultes avec une déficience intellectuelle dans la vie quotidienne de l’atelier, une première pour les Forces armées canadiennes.

Après sa retraite des Forces, Normand a entamé sa deuxième « carrière » en lançant une petite entreprise pour enseigner des compétences en informatique aux personnes âgées et les aider à utiliser leur ordinateur. Il a aussi agit comme bénévole pendant de nombreuses années dans un centre communautaire de Montréal, où il préparait des rapports d’impôts pour les personnes à faible revenu.

Pendant sa trentaine et sa quarantaine, Normand était un coureur assidu et a réalisé trois marathons, y compris un en Grèce. Certains de ses moments les plus heureux ont pris place à voile sur l’eau ou en ski sur les pentes enneigées, des passions qu’il a transmises à ses deux filles. Fervent marin, il n’aimait rien autant que de prendre les voiles avec Marilyn sur leur voilier Serenity, et plus tard, naviguer à bord de leur yacht/chalutier motorisé, Infinity, où ils ont souvent accueilli famille et amis dans la région des Mille-Îles.

Normand adorait passer du temps avec ses filles et leurs familles. Dès le début, il était un papa et grand-papa impliqué – il changeait des couches, chantait des berceuses, lisait des histoires, montrait à ses petits-enfants à pêcher, et s’assurait d’avoir des jeux sur ordinateur pour les amuser pendant leurs visites. Ariana, Chloë, Nicholas et Sophie ont passé bien des moments heureux à Montréal, en visite chez Grandma et Grand-papa. Normand était très fier des réalisations de ses filles et de ses petits-enfants, et célébrait tous les moments importants avec eux. 

Normand demeurera à jamais dans nos souvenirs comme un homme bon, aimable et aimant qui était le rocher de sa famille. Il était rempli de talents, de sa maîtrise de la technologie à sa capacité à réparer n’importe quoi dans la maison, et était toujours heureux de partager ses connaissances avec son entourage. Il était véritablement un merveilleux mari, père, beau-père,grand-père, frère, beau-frère et ami.

Nous tenons à remercier nos familles et amis très chers pour leur amour et leur appui pendant ces moments difficiles.

Un enterrement privé pour la famille aura lieu au cimetière Beechwood, et une célébration de la vie de Normand aura lieu à une date ultérieure. Des invitations et renseignements détaillés seront transmis aux membres de la famille et amis proches une fois les plans finalisés.

Au lieu de fleurs, un don commémoratif à la Fondation de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa ou à l’organisme charitable de votre choix serait grandement apprécié.
