Deacon Denis (Dan) Careau – February 28, 1946 – April 26, 2021.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful, well-loved man.  For almost 45 years Dan was the beloved husband of Jayne (Dee) Careau who was at his side when he passed.  He was a loving father to Monia (Bill) and Carrie-Ann (Marc); grandfather to Brett and Chelsea; and adoring great grandfather of Taliyah. He was also the cherished brother of Louise Couture (Jean-Luc) of Charlebourg, QC. He will be dearly missed by his brothers-in-law in Toronto; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large group of extended family and friends.

His military career with the Canadian Armed Forces took him to many distant places as a Peacekeeper.

Dan was ordained a permanent Deacon in Notre Dame Cathedral in June 2007. He was then assigned to Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Ottawa.  In 2017, he was transferred to Good Shepherd Parish in Gloucester where he remained until his passing.  As a permanent Deacon, he also ministered to the elderly and bereaved and for a time was a Chaplain for the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping.

Dan was an active 4th degree Knight of Columbus at both Resurrection and Good Shepherd, as well as a long-time member of the Ottawa Cursillo Movement.

So many people were impressed with Dan’s humility, his heart for service, his sense of humour and the care he showed to others.

A military service will be held at the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, post-Covid.  As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society would be much appreciated by the family.

Deacon Dan was a Warrior, a Brother; an Angel he became. He was there for us, cared for us, and even knew when we were not well with a simple look in our eyes at church. Deacon Dan was like a brother, and I will forever miss him! May we reconnect when our time comes and may he be praying for us to join him in heaven that day. Rest In Peace ❤️

I have known you for a very long time. Our kids grew up together. But 40 years plus is still too short for the two of us. We have kept in touch in spite of our various moves and you were my best friend. I will miss you until we get back together in Heaven. In spite of distances, take good care of Dee as well as all the kids. BJ and AM

I love you so dearly Deacon Dan, I am sad but also happy. I know you are with Jesus and that you made your decision of freely accepting heaven and the great love of the father. You were so joyful and such a big part of the kingdom of heaven on earth. Now you are a big part of the Church Triumph in heaven. Love you so dearly and I cant wait to see you soon. Dee, I love you and praying for you beautiful.

My deepest condolences to Dee and family. Dan was a gentle giant, not only in stature, but heart and spirit. An inspiration to all. May he rest in the peace of Our Lord.
