Born October 11, 1922, passed away October 3, 2020.  After 75 years of marriage, and being apart for almost a year, Mom and Dad are together again. Flying Officer, RCAF (Retired).  Purchasing Agent, Energy Mines and Resources (Retired). Jack, an Ottawa boy, was the son of John William (Bill) Holliday, Captain of the Ottawa Fire Department, and mother Alice Fryer, he had five sisters, Bessie, Reta, Nancy, Hope, all deceased and survivor Gwen. He was a graduate of Ottawa Technical High School and served during the war as a “bomb aimer” RCAF Bomber Command out of England. He worked after the war in the Public Service EMR as a purchasing agent.  He married Winifred Starrup, Christmas Eve, 1943.  They had five children, Heather, Christine (Don), John (Carol), Karen (Maurice) and Scott (Carol). They also had 7 Grandchildren Christine (Guy), Heidi, Kylie (Richard). David (Katie), Jon, Melissa, and Alex. Great Grandchildren are Troy, Nova, Michael, Isabella and Grayson. Jack wrote many articles for the Ottawa Field Naturalist Club and in his later years he enjoyed writing letters to relatives and friends. The articles for the OFNC are concerning his observations of natural subjects involving such topics as fishing, birds, insects and spiders. His love of nature was contagious and therefore all of his children learned to love it too. Few regrets, he was surprised to live to a ripe old age of 97, sorry that so many of the friends and relatives whom he loved passed before him.

Thank you to the staff at Colonel By Retirement Home for looking after Dad and keeping him safe and happy in his last days. Family and friends will attend a private gathering followed by the burial at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Ave.) on October 13th, 2020.

Thank you, John & Carol Holliday

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your father. As a child, you are not aware of parents’ interesting lives. I knew your father was a bird watcher (I recall seeing him with binoculars in “the bush” at the end of our streets) but not of the other aspects of his life.

John Holliday was a wonderful naturalist. I read his contributions to Trail and Landscape with great interest, especially as they often referred to sightings around Scattergood Lake where I also have a cottage. He had a great life and we would be lucky to have more with his spirit. My best wishes to the family
Tony

Dear Scott, Although it is some years since we last saw your father, we remember him as a kind, positive, knowledgeable and community-minded person, who gave us all a lot. Your obit description adds even more to our appreciation of his contribution. A long life well lived! Gloria and I offer our deep condolences.
