Burpee Mason was born in Tangier, Nova Scotia and passed away peacefully at Perley Rideau Veteran's Health Centre, in the presence of his family, on June 17, 2018, one week short of his 97th birthday. Burpee is survived by his loving daughter Dianne Leclerc (Marcel), grandson Randy (Lin) Showalter and great-granddaughter Tara Showalter. He will be dearly missed by his brother-in-law Arthur MacKenzie (Inez), sister-in-law Gladys Mason, nieces and nephews and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his wife Velda (nee MacKenzie), parents Stanley and Elizabeth (nee Murphy) as well as siblings, Hildred (Fred and Albert) Aitkens-Way, Thelma (Ernie) Sacco, Kathleen (Doug) MacDonald, Frank (Effie), Stanley (Hortense), Lionel (Gladys), Pearl (Fred) Cool, Lavinia (Jim) Clattenburg. Burpee was an army veteran who served 5 years overseas during WWII. On returning home, after the war, Burpee joined the public service and married his best friend's sister, Velda, with whom he celebrated 69 years of happy marriage. He retired from Transport Canada - meteorology, after 30 years of service. Burpee was an exceptionally kind and generous person who, to quote from the Perley Staff, "Always treated people like human beings and never got upset". A special thanks to those family and friends who gave Burpee much pleasure, especially those card game enthusiasts; to the fantastic staff at Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre who brought him such joy and comfort in his final years. We miss you Burpee, more than you can imagine. A Celebration of Burpee’s Life will be held at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m. Friends and family are welcome to visit from 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the National Military Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Burpee’s memory can be made to the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre.

Diane, My condolences on the loss of your father. I remember well when you lived on Drummond Court in Halifax so many years ago. My brother Donnie said you were on the court last year(I think!) . I was sorry I missed you. Sincerely, Heather
