Woo, Poy Kwok

1929-2020

Main Garden Restaurant

With great sadness and much love, we announce the passing of Poy Kwok Woo.  Poy passed away peacefully at home on May 6th at the age of 90.

He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 73 years, Mei Yung, his sons David, Eddy (Tanya), Jim (Mary) and John. His greatest joy was being YaYa to Christopher, Madison, Tasia, Adam and Matthew. He will also be greatly missed by his younger brother Louis (Lan) and his many nieces and nephews. Poy will be fondly remembered by his many friends, neighbours and extended family.

Poy was born in Canton province of China in 1929. Impoverished but educated, he immigrated to Canada in 1952. He travelled across the ocean to a new country and a new language. He landed in Vancouver; moving onward to Montreal by himself. He ended up settling in Ottawa in the mid-1950s and worked at the Café Champlain Restaurant on Bate Island. With hard work, he was able open the Main Garden Chinese Take-Out that later grew into the Main Garden Chinese Restaurant on Main St.  Poy loved his patrons and considered all of them a part of the family.  He later retired in 1994 to spend more time with his family and friends. He enjoyed his afternoons for coffee with friends. Poy had an infectious personality that embraced people from all languages and cultures.

Due to COVID 19 precautions, there will not be a service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Any donations can be made to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Our condolences to the Woo family for their loss. We regret that circumstances will keep us apart. Our family ties stretch back to Toishan province. We will miss coming up to Ottawa to have coffee with him. We hope to be able to come up soon after this is all over and pay our respects in person. From my mother Mei Ping (Woon Nei), Gan and me.

Our condolences to Mrs Woo and the family. We will always have fond memories of Mr Woo, his winning smile. We knew all was well when we saw him go for his daily walk and later sitting in his chair taking in the sun. In sympathy

Our condolences to Mrs. Woo and the family. Mr Woo will be remember fondly, from the small gifts for our girls when they were small, great Halloween bags as they grew older and many fortune cookies over the years. He was always generous with gardening tips especially the award winning green beans. He was a great neighbor and will be missed dearly.
