Beechwood Bee Program 2022

Our Apiary Program grew from 3 hives to 5, this was achieved by recovering one of our swarms and ordering and purchasing a nucleus colony (nuc) last February, as a precautionary measure in case our Hives wouldn’t survive the winter. Granted all 3 colonies did survive.
The term "nuc," a shortened version of the term "nucleus colony," most correctly refers to a small-sized hive in which a small colony of bees resides but also can be used to describe the small colony of bees itself.

Approximately 30 frames were removed for the apiary, which after processing provided approximately 10 gallons of liquid honey (120 lbs/54 kg). We also retrieved the comb honey shallow super, which produced 46 200/250 gr portions of comb honey (Approx 25lbs/11kg.).
Total extraction, (comb and liquid combined) is estimated at 145lbs/66kg - which is within normal production , considering we started the season with 3 healthy hives.
As Fall approaches, we will prepare our hives by treating for Varroa mites, ensure they have plenty of stores for a well deserved slumber throughout the long upcoming winter and hope they will be ready to bounce back in spring 2023.
