John Frederic Miner, 86, active member of dentistry and other passions but his most beloved role was grandfather to his three greatest grandchildren Lily, Jack, and Frederic Miner. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Gabriella Miner. He was forever proud of his son, John-Michael Miner.  Loved dearly by his daughter in law Nadine Rossy. He peacefully passed away on Sunday March 7, 2021.

After graduating from UNB as a geologist, he spent 4 years in Sweden where he met and married his wife Gabriella. Returning to Canada, he graduated from Dalhousie Dental School in 1966 and practiced family dentistry until retiring in 2017.

He was one of the founders of the Bytown Dental Study Club and was involved in teaching and continuing education in dentistry. He won several awards as editor for the Academy of General Dentistry. In later years, he really enjoyed going to Nunavut to treat Inuit children.  In lieu of flowers, John would have loved for people to make donations to the Arctic Children and Youth Foundation at www.acyf.ca. A memorial will be held at a later date.

I was so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of John. As a fellow member of the Bytown Dental Study Club and the Ottawa Dental Society Continuing Education Committee, I have treasured my time with John and will always look fondly on our many interactions. His energy and enthusiasm for all his endeavours was contagious as was his smile. I can only hope to serve my family and community at a fraction of the level as John so effortlessly demonstrated.

John was a colleague, mentor and a close friend to me. I admired his continued passion for dentistry, intellectual input and his humor. He was focused on helping others and delivering the best quality of dental care to his patients. He is a loss to my profession, but its even bigger loss to his friends and family. I remember the day I took this photo where he was teaching me how to ski. I wish his family condolences and sympathy during this difficult time.

Gabriella, Nadine, Lily, Jack and Frederick, we are saddened by the passing of John. John loved his family deeply and was very proud of his grandchildren.

We have been neighbours for decades and we have enjoyed John's presence and good nature for so many years. John was well known and liked by everyone in the neighbourhood who met and talked with him on his daily walks and cross-country skiing outings in the Greenbelt.

This winter we had the special joy of seeing John walk by our house early each morning on his walk into the Greenbelt. If I was outside he would always stop and chat for a few minutes. If a few days went by without seeing John we would wonder. Often it was just timing and sometimes he would tell us he had overdone his outings and pulled a muscle. A long long walk followed by a long cross-country ski outing was not unusual for john. He was strong and the weather never deterred him.

The picture is worth a thousand words.

We will miss his intelligence, good humour, infectious smile and laugh, and pleasant demeanour.

I remember the first time I met John. I was heading down Stinson Avenue to catch the bus and John was walking towards me with his beloved spaniel, Pippy; she was very friendly and excitable. I stopped to pet her and she was wiggling happily and John said she might pee on my shoe, which she did. John chuckled. From then on I remembered to keep my feet back when I met them.

I know you will all miss him deeply and I hope that a lifetime of fond memories will help to sustain you through this difficult time.

Barb and I were shocked to see John’s obituary in the paper this weekend as we had been thinking of him recently. It seems like we have know John forever starting in the 1970s and early 80s at the Bayshore Fitness and Jogging Club. We then moved elsewhere in Ottawa but would sometimes meet him on the XC ski trails in the Gats. As alumni of Dalhousie University during the same period, we shared another connection.

John was always welcoming and friendly - a Maritime thing. Always appreciated by those he met.

The photo is perfect. That is the skier John we remember. We recently wondered if John was still able to hit the trails as we have not seen him for several years. Most likely his spirit will do so now.

Our sincere condolences to Gabriella, John-Michael, family and friends for your loss. We have many fond memories of running and skiing with John over the years although, as happens far too often, we unfortunately lost touch in the later years.

Rest in peace, John.

Gabriella, we are saddened by the loss of John and our condolences go out to you. Over the many years, linda and I appreciated John’s professionalism and caring attitude, as well as yours. And let’s not forget the many jokes he enjoyed sharing with us.

All our love. Ed and Linda
