It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Norman on Sunday, January 31st at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Brenda. Loving father of James (Nancy), John (Sylvia) and Sarah. Caring grandfather to Victoria, Emily, Will, Gillian, Sarah and Ben. He enjoyed a long and successful career pursuing his passion for radiation chemistry in the Institute for National Measurement Standards at the National Research Council. Known for his inquisitive mind and inner strength, he was a mentor and inspiration to many. He had a kind and generous heart and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Norman was a good friend and former colleague with whom I did productive and enjoyable research for many years. His was a well-lived life. My sympathies to Brenda, and his children and grand-children.

Norman was a kind and gentle person. Always made time to chat with people. He also had a great sense of humour. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Norman was a wonderful person and an amazing scientist. He always valued the opinions of others and viewed science as a collective, not individual activity. And he was the best at asking polite, but very perceptive questions at seminars! He made a huge contribution to the work at NRC and will be missed by his friends and colleagues both those still working in M-35 and those retired.
He was also responsible, through the donation of a ping-pong table, for starting what has become a major social event at NRC - the annual "Klassen Classic" table-tennis competition!

My heartfelt condolences to you, Brenda, and your family.
Although I did not have a chance to collaborate with Norman while he was at NRC, he was on the hiring committee that interviewed me in 2001 and brought me back to Canada from Germany to join NRC, an interview I thoroughly enjoyed. I also happen to be the current inhabitant of his former office (no longer with pink walls!).
Despite his retirement in 2002, Norman was a regular return visitor to IRS for talks, etc, and I was always a bit in awe of him and what he knew. He seemed a gentle soul and I would have liked to have known him better.
Since first learning of Norman's passing I've had him in my daily prayers and will continue to pray for the repose of his soul.
