John "Scott" Sheppard, respected political strategist, speechwriter, and advocate for social justice, passed away peacefully at his home in Ottawa on January 27, 2025, at the age of 75 after a long and courageous battle.

Born to John Gavin Sheppard and Suzanne Wood Sheppard, Scott is survived by his devoted partner of 33 years Vance Smith, beloved family; brother Guy (Lana), sister Carol Daly (Charles), brother Blair (Martha), sister-in-law Valerie Huleatt (Tim) and sister-in-law, Heather Hanna (Chris), 4 nieces, 7 nephews, 4 grand nieces and 2 grand nephews. His love for Vance, deep affection for his family, dedication to friends, and country defined him as a person. His loss will leave a lasting void in the hearts and lives of all who knew him.

A graduate of Princeton University, Scott earned a degree in English Literature graduating cum laude in 1971. He went on to study law at the University of Toronto. Scott utilized his sharp intellect and exceptional writing skills to build a distinguished career as a political advisor, consultant and speechwriter where his work profoundly impacted many and helped shape the path of public discourse. A passionate small-L liberal, Scott’s principles were grounded in kindness, integrity, and a tireless pursuit for the betterment of society.

Known for his warmth and thoughtfulness, Scott's ability to listen and offer wise counsel touched the lives of countless individuals. His legacy is one of compassion, commitment to justice, and unwavering love for those he held near and dear. His presence was a steady source of strength for many and he leaves behind a memory that will be cherished by all.

Scott’s passing is a tremendous loss, but his influence will continue through the many lives he touched and his spirit will live on in the values he upheld.

He will be greatly missed.

Visitation to pay respects will be held on Wednesday February 5th, 2025, from 2pm to 4pm and from 5pm to 7pm and Thursday February 6th from 12pm to 1pm. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday February 6th at 1pm followed by a reception. All events are to be held at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave. in Ottawa Ontario.

Donations in Scotts memory can be made to the Parkinson Canada in lieu of flowers.

Scott was always caring, charismatic, thoughtful and generous. He just knew how to make everyone and everything special, and he did so often. We cherish our memories of the incredible person and friend that he was to us over the years. His specialness will live on in our hearts. Our deepest sympathies to Vance and his family.
