It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Barbara Ann Semeniuk (nee Seaby), who left this world peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Ottawa, Joan was the beloved eldest child of George and Gladys Seaby. Joan shared 58 years of marriage with her devoted husband, Peter. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Peter, Karen (Kevin Ouellette), and Kevin (Stephanie). Joan’s love and guidance extended to her five cherished grandchildren: Alexander, Katya, Katrina, Anna, and Ella. She is survived by her loving brother, George Seaby. Joan was predeceased by her parents and her brothers: John (Inge), Murray, Richard (Louise), and Robert (Ann).

Before getting married, Joan was able to see a bit of the world, traveling to Europe twice. She worked at the National Research Council where she met Peter. After welcoming her first child, Joan dedicated herself to motherhood while remaining an active member of her community. Joan’s passion activity-wise was curling and she continued to play into her 80’s. Off the ice, she played instrumental roles in various curling organizations and bonspiels… the Ladies Curling Association (LCA), RA Curling Club, and Crystal Heart (formerly Crystal Pebble) to name a few. Joan also was active within the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church through her involvement in the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League (UCWL), the kids’ summer camp, and bingo. She also enjoyed time playing bridge and golfing with friends, and spending quality moments with family. She was kind, dedicated, and left a lasting impression on many who knew her. Joan will be deeply missed and always remembered for her loving nature and the positive impact she made.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Beechwood Funeral Home (280 Beechwood Avenue). A Funeral Mass followed by a reception will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine (952 Green Valley Crescent).

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

I am so saddened to read this obituary. Joan (Mrs. Semeniuk to us) grew up near my mother (Shirley Drolet Shepertycki) in New Edinburgh, and they both met their Ukrainian-Canadian husbands (Peter and Ted) at the National Research Council where they all worked. Mrs. Semeniuk also lived right beside my maternal grandparents (Charles and Elizabeth Drolet) in Alta Vista for so many years. Mr. Semeniuk, PJ, Karen and Kevin - please accept my deepest and warmest sympathies on the loss of your wife and mother. Hoping that beautiful memories and ongoing connections will help you to move through the grief. Mrs. Semeniuk's legacy is strong and will live on through all of you and through her grandchildren. Love, Cathy

Our dearest sympathy to Peter and the family. Although I did not have a chance to see Mrs Semeniuk in many years, I remember her warmth and generosity. We will all cherish those memories ?
