Just shy of her 85th birthday and 4 months from her 60th wedding anniversary, Irene passed away peacefully at home surrounded by love. Survived by adoring husband John; children Colin and Gail; beloved Gronny to Zoë, Jessie, Audrey and Greer; loving Auntie of Glenn and Sandra. Born in Edinburgh, Irene met John on the boat to Canada and shortly thereafter became an Army wife, coping with numerous moves and separations during John’s career. A lifelong advocate for the underdog, she continued her education with a passion for psychology gaining several university credits while raising her kids and holding full time jobs, most notably as “World’s best secretary of WR Junior High” in Oromocto, and as a correctional officer at the Ottawa Carleton Dentention Centre. Irene was social in all senses of that word. A renowned hostess, her vivacity brought any gathering to life. “She walked with kings and kept the common touch” Friends and family are invited to gather at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa, ON, on Wednesday April 24th, 2019 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Thursday April 25th, 2019 at 2:00 for a Memorial Service with a reception to follow.
