Peacefully, in her 91st year, with her daughter by her side at the Queensway Carleton Hospital on April 7, 2021.  Beloved wife of the late Robert Westley, devoted mother to Elizabeth (Dave Forster) and Susan (Robin Balma), adoring grandmother to Victoria and Emily, loving sister to the late Robert (Heather) and loving aunt to Chris, Ruth, Harold, Mary and the late Barbara (UK).

She met her dashing British pilot and scientist, the love of her life, in Ottawa while both were working at the NRC and their love story spanned two continents but always came back to the Ottawa River.  She was a lady ahead of her time - a Queen’s grad with an adventurous spirit,  who skied the Alps, sailed and explored windy British roads solo.  She knew how to have fun!  She was creative and good with her hands - sewing, painting and playing the piano.  Family was the centre of her world and family trips abroad are treasured memories.  She took great delight in her granddaughters’ activities and sports and was their devoted fan.  Her kind, gentle and giving spirit was felt by all she touched.

The family would like to thank the staff at the QCH for her care in the final weeks of her life and the staff at Chartwell Kanata for their devoted care in the last three years.

Due to the current Covid precautions, a small family graveside service will be held at Beechwood Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held when it is safe to come together again.

As expression of sympathy, for those wishing, memorial donations may be made in Barbara’s name to the Queensway Carleton Hospital,  Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer Society.

Mom, you are forever in our hearts and thank you for the many years of wisdom and love you gave us.
