Marjorie Phyllis Scovill (nee Goldsmith) died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Born in London, England on December 17, 1920, Marjorie was just a few weeks shy of her 99th birthday when she passed away at The Glebe Centre Long-term Care Home in Ottawa.

Marjorie immigrated to Canada in late 1944 as a war bride married to Theodore (Ted) Thompson Scovill, RET W/C (d. 2004). They settled in Niagara Falls, Ontario where their daughter Linda Jane Scovill was born in April 1946. A son, William (Bill) Theodore Scovill followed in Ottawa in August 1948 (d. 2012). As a Canadian Air Force family, moving was a frequent event with postings from Whitehorse, Yukon to London, England with several other locations in between. Prior to her marriage, Marjorie was a switchboard operator for MI6 in the London area during WWII. Marjorie was a devoted homemaker and a frequent model in fashion shows in Ottawa for many years. She volunteered for 20-plus years as a hairdressing assistant at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and the former Grace Hospital.

One of Marjorie’s greatest joys in her life was the presence of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Linda’s daughter, Johanna Marjorie Jung Kramer (b. 1974) is a resident of Durham, NC, along with her husband David Jung and three grown stepchildren, daughter Garyn and twin sons, Adrien and Cohen. Linda’s son, Jason Theodore Kramer (b. 1976) is engaged to Holly Parke. They reside in Alexandria, VA with Jason’s sons, Ryan and Benjamin. Samuel John Scovill, Bill’s son, was born in 1978 and he and his two children, Joshua and Emily live in Melbourne, Australia. Bill’s daughter, Elaine Margaret Scovill (b. 1980) resides in Ottawa with her partner Che Smith and their young daughter, Sia.

The family is planning a Celebration of Life for Marjorie in 2020 when the whole family can gather to participate. We would like to thank the Glebe Centre Long-term Home in Ottawa for the exceptional care they provided for Marjorie. She was much loved by the nursing staff and we were blessed to witness the warmth and care given to her by them.

Marjorie will be cremated and buried in Beechwood Cemetery, not far from where her husband Ted and son Bill are buried in the National Military Cemetery. Donations to the Glebe Centre – Long-term Care Home (glebecentre.ca) would be a fitting tribute to Marjorie’s life.

I was fortunate to meet Elaine’s kind Nana some years ago and have enjoyed reading about her interesting, long life.
