Deacon Denis (Dan) Careau – February 28, 1946 – April 26, 2021.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful, well-loved man. For almost 45 years Dan was the beloved husband of Jayne (Dee) Careau who was at his side when he passed. He was a loving father to Monia (Bill) and Carrie-Ann (Marc); grandfather to Brett and Chelsea; and adoring great grandfather of Taliyah. He was also the cherished brother of Louise Couture (Jean-Luc) of Charlebourg, QC. He will be dearly missed by his brothers-in-law in Toronto; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large group of extended family and friends.
His military career with the Canadian Armed Forces took him to many distant places as a Peacekeeper.
Dan was ordained a permanent Deacon in Notre Dame Cathedral in June 2007. He was then assigned to Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Ottawa. In 2017, he was transferred to Good Shepherd Parish in Gloucester where he remained until his passing. As a permanent Deacon, he also ministered to the elderly and bereaved and for a time was a Chaplain for the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping.
Dan was an active 4th degree Knight of Columbus at both Resurrection and Good Shepherd, as well as a long-time member of the Ottawa Cursillo Movement.
So many people were impressed with Dan’s humility, his heart for service, his sense of humour and the care he showed to others.
A military service will be held at the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, post-Covid. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society would be much appreciated by the family.

God bless you, Deacon Dan and jayne and your beloved family. Dan, In your honor, I have kept a paper copy of the Good Shepherd bulletin of November 25, 2017, (the Feast of Christ the King) that includes your Deacon Dan's Corner message to our parish. Here are the last few paragraphs :
" Jesus is saying that, if we wish to be counted among the 'sheep', then we must actively love people - irrespective of the response we get to that love.. This is the way God loves us.. It's not enough just to fulfil obligations - religious or otherwise.. It won't do to say, "I'm a good enough Catholic"..
No, we are expected to go out of our way, reaching out in love - especially to those in need: the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the poor and naked, the sick and those in prison..
This is the King we are called to serve.. And the way He wants to be served is for us to be filled with care and compassion for brothers and sisters everywhere - and especially for those who are furthest from Him, and those who are not experiencing the abundance that He has filled this world with..
We all serve by loving those who are materially, socially, psychologically, morally and spiritually poor.. Amen. "
Deacon Dan, thank you for your many years of public and spiritual service and sacrifice.
Brother in Jesus Christ, Deacon Dan Careau, Heaven surely became a little brighter and spiritually richer upon your arrival.. bye for now..

Reading all the wonderful tributes in these pages I can add little. Dan was not only a deacon in two of the parishes where I served but also a cherished friend. I will miss him deeply. My heartfelt condolences to Dee and all Dan's family.
