Deacon Denis (Dan) Careau – February 28, 1946 – April 26, 2021.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful, well-loved man.  For almost 45 years Dan was the beloved husband of Jayne (Dee) Careau who was at his side when he passed.  He was a loving father to Monia (Bill) and Carrie-Ann (Marc); grandfather to Brett and Chelsea; and adoring great grandfather of Taliyah. He was also the cherished brother of Louise Couture (Jean-Luc) of Charlebourg, QC. He will be dearly missed by his brothers-in-law in Toronto; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large group of extended family and friends.

His military career with the Canadian Armed Forces took him to many distant places as a Peacekeeper.

Dan was ordained a permanent Deacon in Notre Dame Cathedral in June 2007. He was then assigned to Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Ottawa.  In 2017, he was transferred to Good Shepherd Parish in Gloucester where he remained until his passing.  As a permanent Deacon, he also ministered to the elderly and bereaved and for a time was a Chaplain for the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping.

Dan was an active 4th degree Knight of Columbus at both Resurrection and Good Shepherd, as well as a long-time member of the Ottawa Cursillo Movement.

So many people were impressed with Dan’s humility, his heart for service, his sense of humour and the care he showed to others.

A military service will be held at the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, post-Covid.  As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society would be much appreciated by the family.

Dan was a man of God and good friend of many like me. A long term member of the Deacons Council which he served for long period of time. He was also a man of prayer and discipline. Dear brother, you are with Lord which is the ultimate prize of every Christian. Our prayers for your family.

Deacon Dan was the Rector at my Cursillo in the fall of 2014. He was the one that suggested that I become a Deacon. His love and light were so very enlightening to interpret God's calling for me, for I knew that I was being called, but did not understand what exactly He wanted me to do. I became a Knight of Columbus and then did my Cursillo, then, by Deacon Dan's presence and love it became clear to me. Let us all Repent and Submit to His Will so that we may, by His Will, be reunited with Deacon Dan in Heaven.
