Deacon Denis (Dan) Careau – February 28, 1946 – April 26, 2021.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful, well-loved man.  For almost 45 years Dan was the beloved husband of Jayne (Dee) Careau who was at his side when he passed.  He was a loving father to Monia (Bill) and Carrie-Ann (Marc); grandfather to Brett and Chelsea; and adoring great grandfather of Taliyah. He was also the cherished brother of Louise Couture (Jean-Luc) of Charlebourg, QC. He will be dearly missed by his brothers-in-law in Toronto; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large group of extended family and friends.

His military career with the Canadian Armed Forces took him to many distant places as a Peacekeeper.

Dan was ordained a permanent Deacon in Notre Dame Cathedral in June 2007. He was then assigned to Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Ottawa.  In 2017, he was transferred to Good Shepherd Parish in Gloucester where he remained until his passing.  As a permanent Deacon, he also ministered to the elderly and bereaved and for a time was a Chaplain for the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping.

Dan was an active 4th degree Knight of Columbus at both Resurrection and Good Shepherd, as well as a long-time member of the Ottawa Cursillo Movement.

So many people were impressed with Dan’s humility, his heart for service, his sense of humour and the care he showed to others.

A military service will be held at the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, post-Covid.  As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society would be much appreciated by the family.

Dearest Dan, you were the love of my life and I will miss you forever. My heart is broken at your passing. You are with the Lord and I know I will be only a breath away from you when God closes the book of my life. I thank Him for our 45 years together and love you with all my heart.

We are thankful for the witness you gave, in everything you did and how you were always so genuine, caring and joyful. For being a “good and faithful servant”, may God grant you eternal rest.

We will deeply miss our dear friend but fondly remember all the good times we had as our families grew up together and the reunions in the years that followed those precious times. You were always such a caring and giving person and the best of friends.
