On Thursday December 24, 2020, Major John Carter (retired), loving husband and father, passed away at The Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre, at the age of 80.
He is survived by his wife Ursula (nee Mankus), 2 sons, Wolf and Klaus (Melanie Lachapelle), and brother Jerry.
John was born on June 6, 1940 in St Thomas, Ontario to Harold and Irene Carter. He enlisted into the Canadian Army as an Armour Corps trooper in 1958, serving with the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise’s), and subsequently the Royal Canadian Dragoons and 12ieme Regiment Blinde du Canada.
John’s distinguished career of 36 years brought him to serve in Canada, Germany, Egypt, and Cyprus. He held numerous leadership and technical qualifications. He completed the Canadian Forces Staff School and the Canadian Forces Land and Command and Staff College. Major John Carter retired from the Armed forces, holding the position of Director Personnel Career Administration Other Ranks 2.
John went on to work for the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires first as Commandant Hull Division and later as the Director of Operations.

John and Ula stood by us at our civil marriage in Fredericton in 1980. They were good friends during our posting in CFB Gagetown. I served with him there and as well in Cyprus where he was our Squadron Sargeant Major.
