Slipped away peacefully on the 16th of August 2019.
Cherished husband of Heidi (née Flemming), beloved father of Elke (Mitch) and Elmar (Melissa), Opa of Colin, Emery and Warner, step-grandpa of R.J. and Bradley.
Predeceased by his brother Hans (Irmgard). Much loved brother of Antoinette (Bernhard) and uncle of Andrea, Claudia, Therese and Fred; also leaving behind many cousins, friends and other family members in Germany. He was a former businessman who greatly enjoyed the outdoors; above all, fishing, flying and taking long walks through the woods. Friends will remember him entertaining them with many colourful stories and jokes, singing with his lovely voice and engaging them in stimulating philosophical discussions.
Now that his earthly journey has ended, he will be able to wander peacefully in his own spiritual realm.
Many thanks to the Salvation Army’s Grace Manor for their help in having made his three year stay as comfortable as possible. Praise as well for the staff at the Civic Hospital’s Emergency Department and the doctors and nurses of A554.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
If you wish, kindly consider making a donation either to the Salvation Army, Civic Hospital or the Dementia Society of Canada.

I was very sorry to hear of Fred's passing. While my husband Emmett was at the Grace, I got to know both Heidi and Fred. Heidi's devotion to Fred was a inspiration to me. Heidi not only looked after Fred, but also provided care and comfort to the other residents of the Gladstone ward. May Fred now rest in peace.

May he Rest In Peace. All of our love to your family. He was a lovely man. Many fond memories of the Schaettgen household growing up. He was always very kind to me.
