With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mae Yung (Mae) Draker, beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Surrounded by her family, Mae passed away peacefully at the age of 71 at the Civic Hospital following an unexpected brain injury.
Mae was an inspiration and a role model to her two daughters, Stephanie (Randy) and Jessica (Joshua). She will be dearly missed by her brothers and sisters, Bun (Yan-Qing), Mae-Hah, Mae-Ling (Ron), Hazel (Per) and John (Christine), her nieces and nephews, Zi-Ann, Geoffrey, Nathan and Rachel, as well as many other family members and friends.
Mae will be remembered for her infectious laugh, zest for life, story-telling, cooking, and her passion for travel. She enjoyed a very rewarding 37 year career with Royal Bank in Ottawa and cherished her many friendships with colleagues and customers.
Family and friends are invited to visit and pay their respects on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa, ON) between 1:30pm and 4:00pm. So very sad to hear of Mae's passing. I enjoyed and cherished working with her at RBC from our early days at Main branch on Sparks St. Most recent memories were at our RBC retirement dinners at the Royal Hunt Club, sharing our many stories and adventures. My sincere condolences to Stephanie, Jessica and family.

I can't believe she's gone. Or I don't want to believe it. Mae was one of the most vital people I've ever met. We lived in the same building; we talked often; each time I knew she was someone I wanted to emulate. Our home is now so much emptier.
Please accept my condolences.

Mae Yung came from a very big family, and she was the oldest daughter of four girls, second oldest of seven siblings. We first met briefly in Hong Kong, and later again in Toronto shortly after I arrived from Hong Kong to live in Canada.
Life was tough in Canada. We had to work very hard.
Mae Yung was about ten years old, and she was a very good and hard-working daughter. After she came home from school, Mae Yung helped her grandparents work at the laundry cleaners. Later when her parents owned a restaurant, she helped work at the kitchen in the restaurant.
When we worked together at the laundry cleaners, I remember how one day Mae Yung purchased a slice of ham with a dime. She divided the slice of ham into four quarters, pointed to one portion and said, “This piece is for you.” I will never forget how she was so kind and generous to me.
Mae Yung had a boyfriend whom she later married. She had a hard time because he was not Chinese. Long time ago this was not acceptable. She sacrificed a lot! She did not finish school but went out to work so that she could support her husband to finish his education. They seemed happily married, and they’d send photos of their trips together.
Shortly after having two beautiful daughters, Stephanie and Jessica, Mae Yung became a single parent. Not once did she ask for help or utter any complaint. Her daughters were her main focus and priority in her life, and she continued to work hard and managed to provide everything so that her daughters would not be in need of any good thing.
Mae Yung was very highly respected in and out of the work place. She helped lots of people throughout her years. She was confident and courageous, very friendly towards everyone, bubbly and happy, generous with her time and resources. She loved to travel and to read books. When she returned from a trip, she’d call to say that she was back.
Recently Mae Yung spoke about how relieved she was that her daughters have grown up and are successful and happily married. It was like mission accomplished.
Mae Yung had made plans to go on another trip. Now, she has travelled to another world.
